6 Must-Visit Religious Attractions in Ireland
If you’re a history buff or want to explore Christian history, Ireland is your go-to place. Full of historic ruins, well-preserved cathedrals, and Christian heritage sites, the country has plenty to offer you.
Here’s a list of the major religious attractions in Ireland that you must check out while you’re there.
1. Armagh
In the 400s, St. Patrick established his church in Armagh, and in the following years, the city became the religious center of Northern Ireland. Soon many educational institutes were also established there, which further elevated the status of Armagh. The two points of interest for tourists visiting Armagh are St. Patrick’s Anglican Cathedral and St. Patrick’s Roman Cathedral.
2. St. Patrick’s Cathedral
St. Patrick’s Cathedral is the largest church in the country and stands near the site where St. Patrick baptized all the coverts in 450 A.D. This Gothic-style Anglican cathedral was restored in the 1870s and is home to significant statues and tombs along with Ireland’s largest, 140-ft long spire, which casts its shadow on the church’s stone walls.
3. Christ Church Cathedral
Christ Church Cathedral was first built by Norman-Anglo invaders in Dublin and was restored centuries later during the Victorian age. This is largely why this cathedral is considered a British establishment in Irish history. Made in the 12th century, the crypt in the cathedral is the oldest structure of Dublin. The cathedral has artifacts from the time James II prayed there, a Treasures of Christ Church exhibition, and several other tourist attractions.
4. Trinity College
Trinity College, Dublin, is Ireland’s oldest and most popular college. Its famous Long Room has the country’s biggest collection of manuscripts and books. The sacred Book of Kells, one of the world’s oldest preserved manuscripts, is also kept in Trinity College. The college has a bell tower in the center, and the entire campus is open to visitors. The college also has notable alumni such as Samuel Beckett, Oscar Wilde, and Jonathan Swift.
5. Ennis Friary
The city of Ennis was developed around the Ennis Friary in the 13th century. This Franciscan Friary housed 600 students and 300 friars who came there from all parts of Europe. During this time, the Ennis Friary was considered one of the major centers for Christian education. Currently, visitors can see the remaining ruins of this Friary.
6. Knock Shrine
In the village of Knock, there’s a significant pilgrimage site for Roman Catholics. Many Christians believe that there was an apparition of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, John the Evangelist, and St. Joseph in this shrine. More than 1.5 million visitors come to the shrine every year, making it the most popular religious site in Western Ireland.
