Benefits of Genealogy Research for Medical Science

IrishHeritage Blog

3D visualization of DNA

In the past few decades, medical science has seen incredible development. More research is being done now than ever before. More information and sophisticated tools are available to gain better insights into the human body. Scientists are still always on the lookout for more ways to advance humanity and increase average life expectancy.

Genealogy has played a huge role in this advancement. DNA research is still a growing phenomenon, and scientists are still learning ways to decode the information present on DNA. However, as the DNA information gets decoded, medical science can go even farther and help people gain better protection against diseases.

Here are some of the major diseases that can be detected using timely genealogy research.

Identify Hereditary Cancer

Certain categories of cancer are inherited and can be seen in a person’s genetic makeup. It’s when a parent’s genetic mutation is passed down to their child. Such cancers can be foreseen using genealogy research.

A popular example of detecting the cancer gene is to test for BRCA1 and BRCA2. The presence of these mutations means that the person runs the risk of developing breast cancer.

Recognize Sickle Cell Anemia

Sickle cell anemia is an inherited blood disorder that changes the shape of the red blood cell. Normal blood cells are round, which makes them more conducive to absorbing oxygen effectively. A person with sickle cell anemia has oxygen deficiency as a result of this disorder.

Genetic testing can help identify sickle cell anemia as it’s always received from a parent.

Predict Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis is also passed down from one generation to the next. It’s extremely detrimental to the lungs, digestive system, and other major organs. Even if it’s not dominant in the parent, they can still carry the gene and give it to their child. With genealogy, cystic fibrosis can be dealt with preemptively, and the damage can be controlled.

Detect Huntington’s Syndrome and Parkinson’s disease

Genetic mutations such as Huntington’s and Parkinson’s diseases usually run in the family. Both these disorders make themselves evident much later in life and can easily go ignored.

While genealogy research can’t prevent these conditions from happening, you can start treating them earlier on and delay their progression.
