What is Included in the Wicklow Way Tour?

IrishHeritage Uncategorized

Wicklow is a small town in Ireland surrounded by beautiful mountains and national parks. The Wicklow national park is the 6th largest park in Ireland, filled with beautiful flora, water bodies, and historic architecture against the backdrop of mountains. My Ireland Family Heritage offers a Wicklow Way Tour, a historic and cultural tour of Ireland. Here’s what’s included in that tour.

Glendalough

Glendalough is a glacial valley in Wicklow. It’s known for its medieval monastic settlement in the 6th century. As a result, the location has several historic ruins from the early Christian period. The valley also features Ireland’s highest waterfall, surrounded by beautiful parklands at the foothills. It’s a scenic location if you want to look at historic buildings along with breathtaking nature views. Another place to visit is the Powerscourt House, which overlooks these amazing views.

Avoca

The Avoca is a river in the County of Wicklow. The speciality of this river is that it starts its life as two different rivers, the Avonbeg, and the Avonmore. Both rivers join together at the Meeting of the Waters spot, which is in the valley of Avoca. This meeting point is a local beauty spot surrounded by mountains and clear skies. Many tourists visit the spot for a picnic and to enjoy the views of nature.

Historic Wicklow Jail

The historic Wicklow Jail played a huge role in Ireland’s migration periods back in 1798. During that time, Wicklow was an area of conflict, and the jail imprisoned many rebels. Again, during the 1840s, there was a considerable increase in the crime rate. This was mainly due to the famine and lack of food. Finally, the prison was also a focal point in the 1916 to 1923 independence movement in Ireland. On this tour, you’ll visit the prison and the areas surrounding it to experience what prison was like back in those days and how it played a major role in making what Ireland is today.
