County Kerry’s mountainous, coastal landscape produced some of the tightest-knit rural communities in Ireland, many of them Irish-speaking well into the 19th and 20th centuries, and many of them hit hard by the Great Famine and the emigration that followed it. The town is on the northeastern shore of Lough Leane, part of Killarney National Park, and is home to St Mary’s Cathedral, Ross Castle, Muckross House and Abbey, the Lakes of Killarney, the tallest Mountain in Ireland part of the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, Purple Mountain, Mangerton Mountain, the Gap of Dunloe and Torc Waterfall.
